Why EGR Delete?
There are many reasons why an owner-operator or fleet owner would elect to have an EGR delete performed on one or more of their vehicles. Before we get into the reasons for deleting it, let’s first review the purpose of the EGR component. Specifically, the EGR is a component that’s designed to reduce emissions by pumping a certain amount of the exhaust back into the engine through the air intake system. However, it’s also a problematic component, as it has a reputation of causing some serious issues to the diesel engines it works with because of the carbon deposits that often persist in the exhaust it’s working to recirculate. These issues may include everything from stuck valves, cylinder issues, and engine overheating. The overall life of the engine may also be compromised from the exhaust gases that are recirculating through it. Hence, deleting the EGR eliminates the problems associated with it, thereby reducing repair costs, premature engine failure, and any downtime that may result from it.
There are various other benefits associated with EGR delete, which include:
- A more efficient engine, which translates to an improvement in fuel economy.
- A better running engine: Eliminate the EGR and the engine is able to perform better. In fact, owners should immediately notice an improved throttle response. The engine also runs at much cooler temperatures following deletion.
- A longer lasting engine: As we noted above, an EGR system can reduce the overall life of the engine based on the task it performs. Therefore, deleting the component can help extend the life of the engine and reduce engine repairs throughout its life. This is due to the reduced carbon particle contamination.
