Caterpillar DPF Delete
As an owner-operator or fleet manager, you’re always looking to reduce downtime and overhead costs, while increasing efficiency. Unfortunately, with the way many of today’s diesel engine vehicles are made, some of their included components make this difficult. One of these components is the DPF, or diesel particulate filter. It’s designed to perform an important role: catching soot and other exhaust contaminants before they can be emitted into the environment. But it’s also a very problematic component because of how it needs to be cleaned, and for this reason many opt just to have the DPF removed. At Diesel Spec, we work with a wide range of engine makes and models to perform services like DPF Delete. One of the engines we’re pleased to offer our delete services on is Caterpillar.

The DPF Explained
Like we said in the opening, the DPF tends to be a very problematic component, and much of this has to do with how it’s cleaned. The DPF is cleaned via a process known as “regeneration,” which requires high temperatures to occur. In order to reach these high temperatures, vehicles need to be traveling at over 45 miles per hour and then stay at those speeds consistently throughout the process. The process, however, can take up to 45 minutes to complete – and it’s necessary about every 300 miles or so. Noting this, it’s difficult for many vehicles to reach the conditions that regeneration requires to take place. If regeneration cannot occur the way it’s designed, the DPF can clog. When the DPF clogs, the engine can also suffer damage. This can lead to costly repairs and vehicle downtime, which cut into an owner-operator or fleet manager’s bottom line.
That’s where a DPF delete can really help.
Benefits of Caterpillar DPF Delete
Aside from reducing potential maintenance and vehicle downtime, there are several other benefits to a Caterpillar DPF delete. For instance, fuel economy usually improves following the process. This is because the DPF commands fuel to perform regeneration. Eliminating the DPF thereby eliminates the need for regeneration, making a tank of fuel go further. When it comes to overhead costs, fuel is one of the most expensive for owner-operators and fleet managers, so even a marginal savings can be significant.
Another benefit is improved engine performance. The DPF actually restricts engine power, so having it deleted will translate to an engine that works up to its full power potential.
